Thionyl chloride is used as a chlorinating agent in organic synthesis, such as chlorination of alcohol hydroxyl groups, chlorination of carboxylic acids, chlorination of acid anhydrides, chlorine substitution of organic sulfonic acids or nitro compounds, and manufacturing acyl chlorides. It is also used in cyclization reactions (formation of thiazolines, pyrrolidines, production of amides) and Beckmann rearrangement. Thionyl chloride is a core raw material for the production of sucralose, aramid, nylon and new lithium salt LiFSI.
